Kucinich Wins Virginia Democratic Party Poll

By David Swanson

Congressman Dennis Kucinich has won the Virginia Democratic Party’s online presidential primary straw poll. Candidates in the poll included the six Democrats who have qualified to appear on the primary ballot in Virginia on February 12.

The party’s website said from the start and continues to say that the straw poll voting closed at midnight on December 23rd. In reality, it is still possible to vote and to change the totals. Since the 23rd, the numbers have increased read more

How to Vote in Primaries and Not Be an Idiot

A Short Instructions Manual
By David Swanson

1. Virtually nobody votes in primaries (or caucuses) compared to general elections. Therefore, each individual primary vote is worth many times what it is in the general election. And, it’s more likely to be counted, since there’s typically less fraud and abuse of the system in primaries. So, if you vote in general elections, you pretty much have to vote in primaries in order to not be an idiot. Bring a few friends to vote too, and you’re read more

Kucinich in Charlottesville

Dennis Kucinich in Charlottesville VA on Friday, December 7th.

Central Virginia, home to Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and the father of our Constitution, James Madison, will be the site of a rally for a presidential candidate working to defend that Constitution.

The creators of our government intended the Congress to be the most powerful branch of it, and provided as a defense of that power the impeachment process. Central to their thinking was concern that an unchecked executive could take read more

Two Chances to Change the World

We’re headed rapidly toward a disastrous attack on Iran, an acceptance of permanent occupation of Iraq, over 1,000 US military bases in other people’s countries, and the point of no turning back on global warming.

No matter how deeply your television has ingrained into your head the anti-democratic notion that the candidates you like and the candidates you should support are two different things, you can still use the money-soaked corrupt primary system we have to impact Congress immediately read more

Why Kucinich Should Concede Nothing

By David Swanson

When someone whose opinions I respect as much as John Nichols’ joins those who have been saying since 2003 that Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich should announce that he’s not REALLY running for president, I feel compelled to reply.

Nichols, like most Americans, supports the same policy positions that I do and that Kucinich does. Nichols would end foreign occupations, cancel NAFTA, create single-payer health coverage, invest in education and green read more

The Obama-Edwards Ticket

By David Swanson

A top priority for progressives regarding next year’s presidential election should be convincing Barack Obama and John Edwards to join forces as a ticket and defeat Hillary Clinton.

Were one of them to drop out, the other would easily take first place in the polls. But neither of them is likely to drop out. As a result, unless they join forces, we will face a choice between a pro-war, pro-corporate Republican and the pro-war, pro-corporate Hillary Clinton. Jeff Cohen read more

Peace, Injustice, and Ron Paul

By David Swanson

If Ron Paul had been president for the past 6 years, a million more Iraqis would be alive, and another 4 million would not be refugees. The world would be a safer place, and Americans would have lost fewer freedoms.

But more Americans would lack decent health care. More American children would lack adequate education. More families in America would struggle in poverty. Immigrant families would face increased threats and abuse. Women would have lost rights. And a growing read more

CNN and 4 Dems Opt to Skew Debate

By David Swanson

CNN allowed the eight Democratic presidential campaigns to vote: Should CNN continue to place its preferred candidates together in the center of the stage in order to keep the candidates it ignores off camera at the edges, or should it follow the model PBS used last week and choose candidate positions on the stage by random drawing? Dodd, Gravel, and Kucinich were joined by Hillary Clinton in opting for the random drawing. Edwards and Obama were joined by Richardson and Biden in read more

Is Our Peace Activists Learning?

By David Swanson

Over the past two months of repeated Congressional votes to fund the occupation of Iraq, culminating in President Bush’s signing the bill on Friday, what – if anything – have we learned? Have we learned anything about individuals or political parties or activist organizations to trust or despise, or have we learned better what to demand of them regardless of such emotions? Have we learned anything about policies to support, battles to lose, pyrrhic victories, or how read more

What Do These Crimes Have in Common?

By David Swanson

Another day, another impeachable offense. If this one were on a television show we’d all flip it off in disgust as too unlikely. The President phones up a hospital to demand that the ailing Attorney General (who has turned over his duties and is disoriented) admit the President’s legal counsel and chief of staff so that they can ask him to sign off on an illegal spying program. The AG refuses to sign off. The acting AG, who is fully conscious but considers the program read more
