This Week on Talk World Radio we’re talking about a new book called Abolishing the Military: Arguments and Alternatives, with two of the three authors, joining us from New Zealand, it being the New Zealand military in particular that they’d like to abolish. With us is Joseph Llewellyn who completed his PhD at the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Otago. He completed a Master of Arts and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Peace and Conflict Studies at the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies. Also with us is Richard Jackson who holds the Leading Thinkers Chair in Peace Studies at the University of Otago. He lectures on critical terrorism studies and critical peace studies at the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies. He is the author or editor of fifteen books and more than a hundred articles and book chapters on pacifism and nonviolence, conflict resolution, war and terrorism. He is the editor of the journal Critical Studies on Terrorism and commentates regularly in the media on international security issues. See:

Kia Ora Tātou Greetings to David, Richard and Joseph

Great to hear you all discussing Abolishing the Military of our fair country Aotearoa NZ! I am busy reading the book as Richard is coming to our Quaker Summer Gathering in a few days time to discuss the topic with us.

I always think it took some time to persuade people to stop smoking. It also took time for that Berlin Wall to come down. Here in ANZ it also took a grass-roots campaign to make us nuclear-free so we need to keep pushing this kaupapa (theme) so that it gets discussed in all circles.

I’m delighted at the publication of this book.

I also highly recommend courses run by World Beyond War. They certainly keep you thinking.

It is a great move to have the book “A Global Security System: An alternative to War” available free online. Read it.

My husband and I read aloud to each other every evening the World Beyond War “Peace Almanac”. We reread a few lines re the day which is nearly over and the full text about the next day. That is also now available free-of-charge on the World Beyond Website. I’d like to see an Aotearoa NZ version of this almanac.

Support this wonderful organisation and let’s get a World Beyond War!!
