You Don't Need a Weatherman

By David Swanson

Do you support the right of the people of Iraq to fight back against a hostile foreign occupation? If so, why are you at peace, fat and happy and not risking your precious little life? Why are you not joining in the fight against the empire by striking violent blows in the homeland?

Or do you support the use of nonviolence as a superior tactic for achieving lasting peace? Then why are you not actively trying to persuade the Iraqis to make more use of nonviolent resistance and read more

Obamessives and Obamicans

By David Swanson

A friend just described to me the scene last weekend in Richmond, Va., prior to the Tuesday Virginia primary in which Obama trounced Clinton. Both of them spoke at a Democratic Party dinner in Richmond, and a huge crowd outside and inside cheered and screamed, reportedly mostly for Obama. My friend said she’d not felt the same thing since the 1963 march on Washington. She said the crowd was mixed in terms of age and race in a way she hadn’t seen since then. She, read more

Kucinich: "The Incident Did Not Happen"

By David Swanson

I spoke with Congressman Dennis Kucinich because a rumor was gaining traction that:

“Before the Nevada primary, Dennis was visited by representatives of Nancy Pelosi and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee — AIPAC. They told Dennis that if he would drop his campaigns to impeach Cheney and Bush, they would guarantee his re-election to the House of Representatives. Kucinich threw them out of his office.”

According to Kucinich, “The incident did not happen.” read more

Depleted Uranium and Depleted Democracy

By David Swanson
Remarks at October 27, 2007, rally in Jonesborough, Tenn., preceding march to Aerojet Ordnance, manufacturers of Depleted Uranium weapons.

There are those who think Congress should keep shelling out our grandchildren’s money to continue our occupation of Iraq, and there are those who think Congress should pass a bill opposing the occupation. And they are both wrong. Any decent bill on any issue, much less this one, will be vetoed. The way to stop funding the occupation read more

Observing Our Government Through Blackwater

By David Swanson

Jeremy Scahill, author of a terrific book on the Blackwater mercenary army, spoke in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Tuesday to a packed hall. He took questions at the end, and one man asked something to the effect of “Why does the government want to privatize the military? We taxpayers have been paying for the Army.” I wished Scahill had pointed out that it’s the tax payers who are now paying the private corporations, but the answer Scahill gave was critical. read more

World War III

By David Swanson

The administration of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney is set on a course that leads directly to a third world war. And a third world war leads almost inevitably to most of us dying horrible deaths. And we’re not talking about it.

The White House has made clear it is seriously considering attacking Iran with massive bombing aimed at destroying the nation’s military and changing its government. Iran will certainly retaliate. If attacked, and possibly even if not attacked, read more

How to Spot a Peace Candidate

By David Swanson

I think you could spot a peace candidate in a crowd of warmongers pretty easily if you asked each candidate these questions.

Do you oppose wars of aggression?

Do you oppose an aggressive US war on Iran?

Did you oppose the 2003 US war on Iraq?

Did you oppose the 2001 US war on Afghanistan?

Did you oppose the 1999 US war on Yugoslavia?

Did you oppose the 2006 Israeli war on Lebanon?

Have you ever spoken in support of, or voted to authorize, or voted to fund any portion of any of these wars? read more

Questions for Candidates

By David Swanson

If, like General Electric and Fox News, ordinary citizens were permitted to ask questions of candidates for U.S. President, these are a few of the questions I think they might ask:

If you are elected president, which of the new presidential powers assumed by the Bush-Cheney administration will you use? Which will you leave available in case you decide to use them? Which will you issue orders banning the use of?

Will you ever spy on Americans in violation of the Foreign Intelligence read more
