NIE: Normalizing Idiocy and Exaggeration

By David Swanson

Remember the last NIE (National Intelligence Estimate) that made really big news? Remember how it helped defraud a nation into an aggressive war and occupation that has left nearly a million Iraqis and 4,000 Americans dead? Remember how the declassified bits distorted the truth much further than the full report?

If you do remember that document, one thing is certain: You are not Senator Jay Rockefeller. While the Democrats were in the minority in 2005 and 2006, Rockefeller read more

Edwards Brings Progress to Progressives?

By David Swanson

jsamuel at MyDD has posted a blog promoting John Edwards and disparaging Dennis Kucinich – or at least me. He opens with a bunch of polls and an argument that Edwards is gaining progressives’ backing:

“Is it because he is the most crazy liberal of all the candidates? Of course not. It is because progressives believe that he is the most capable candidate to be successful in implementing their ideals.”

In fact, Edwards has taken many honestly progressive positions, read more

Orange Revolution

The Orange Revolution Begins July 23

On July 23, 2002, the head of British intelligence reported that Bush and Cheney were intent on invading Iraq and planned to “fix the intelligence and facts around the policy”. Five years later a million people have died in Iraq as a direct result of these lies with no end in sight. Torture has been institutionalized, habeas corpus eviscerated, and illegal spying made routine. New Orleans lies devastated along with the Constitution and the rule of read more

Bush Has Photos of Pelosi

By David Swanson

Bush has photos of Pelosi doing… WHAT?

Here’s the situation Nancy Pelosi finds herself in. A full 54% of Americans and 76% of Democrats want Dick Cheney impeached. Cheney’s 13% favorability makes him the least popular president or vice president ever. The Washington Post reports that Republicans are turning against Cheney. By failing to act, the Democratic Congress has made itself less popular than Bush. Were the Congress to impeach Cheney and the Senate to acquit read more

John Edwards' Fortress

By David Swanson

The bulk of John Edwards’ wealth is invested in, his recent income derives from, and his biggest contributors are employed by Fortress Investment Group. Fortress, which paid Edwards almost half a million dollars to advise them, deals in hedge funds and private equity. Its private equity holdings have not been reported on. (Where is journalism when there’s no sex involved?) Its hedge funds invest in, among other things, publicly traded companies. Those are reported read more

Hillary for Emperor

By David Swanson

I’ve decided to drop my advocacy for the impeachment of Cheney or Bush and focus on something more realistic: making Senator Hillary Clinton our next emperor. After all, when the candidate is someone good, you should want them to have as much power as possible. Bear with me a minute, and I think you may agree.

Now, electing Clinton as the 44th President is one thing, and that would be wonderful. But what makes that task truly historic and worth devoting our energies to read more

John Edwards' Money and His Health Plan

By David Swanson

John Edwards has reported $29.5 million in personal assets to the FEC, of which his aides have told the Wall Street Journal $16.1 million is invested in Fortress Investment Group, a hedge fund that invests in Humana, the health insurance company that comes in for sharp criticism in Michael Moore’s blockbuster movie “Sicko.”

Edwards does not just invest in Fortress. It also invests in him, to the tune of $1.7 million in pay and investment income, including $479,512 read more
