Kucinich to Move Impeachment of Bush After Cheney

By David Swanson

Congressman Dennis Kucinich said on a conference call Monday evening that after moving to impeach Vice President Cheney on Tuesday he will also introduce, at a future date, a resolution to impeach President Bush. Or rather, he would have said that on the conference call if not for several technical SNAFUs.

The call was advertised as a one-way call on which only Kucinich could speak, but Kucinich was unable to get through because of the incredible number of people on the call (I read more

Why Kucinich Should Concede Nothing

By David Swanson

When someone whose opinions I respect as much as John Nichols’ joins those who have been saying since 2003 that Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich should announce that he’s not REALLY running for president, I feel compelled to reply.

Nichols, like most Americans, supports the same policy positions that I do and that Kucinich does. Nichols would end foreign occupations, cancel NAFTA, create single-payer health coverage, invest in education and green read more

Obama Comes to Virginia

By David Swanson

I’m live-blogging an Obama rally here in Charlottesville VA. I just wrote 10′ tall in chalk on the Charlottesville “Freedom of Expression Wall” the following: “Hey, Barack, If you’ll filibuster the spying, why won’t you filibuster the war funding?” I’d love to actually ask him, but I couldn’t afford the $1,000 for the small gathering that is just ending. Instead, I’m at the big outdoor gathering for the masses read more

Jonesborough Justice

By David Swanson

Of the eleven major peace rallies organized around the country by United for Peace and Justice last Saturday the smallest and most unusual took place in Jonesborough, Tennessee. Jonesborough is a town of about 4,000 people in the northeast corner of Tennessee, within a couple of dozen miles of both Virginia and North Carolina. The people of Jonesborough can imagine the number of U.S. troops who have died in Iraq by imagining their entire local population dead.

Edwards and Trade

David Sirota and Jonathan Tasini both have blogs out this morning celebrating John Edwards’ denunciation of corporate trade agreements and opposition to new ones. Both paint Edwards as a ferocious opponent of NAFTA. But neither of these bloggers mentions the fact that Edwards stood on stage in Soldier Field and joined every other candidate except Dennis Kucinich in affirming that he would NOT end NAFTA. He would try to “fix it.” Now, you can try to make an argument for prefering read more

Depleted Uranium and Depleted Democracy

By David Swanson
Remarks at October 27, 2007, rally in Jonesborough, Tenn., preceding march to Aerojet Ordnance, manufacturers of Depleted Uranium weapons.

There are those who think Congress should keep shelling out our grandchildren’s money to continue our occupation of Iraq, and there are those who think Congress should pass a bill opposing the occupation. And they are both wrong. Any decent bill on any issue, much less this one, will be vetoed. The way to stop funding the occupation read more
