BREAKING NEWS: Cheney Denies Being Human

By David Swanson

Every corporate media outlet in the country believes a story that Democrats.com reported months ago is the top news of the day. Here’s the Los Angeles Times version:

BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Craig denies being gay

“I am not gay,” Sen. Larry Craig said twice during a 10-minute statement today following news that he had pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after being arrested at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on suspicion of lewd behavior in a men’s read more

Secret to Forcing Compliance with Subpoenas

By David Swanson

On April 10th, the House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed the Justice Department for papers and Emails related to the apparently politically motivated firings of U.S. attorneys. The deadline passed. The DOJ did not comply.

On April 25th, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee subpoenaed Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to testify about the forged documents used as evidence that Iraq was developing nuclear weapons. Rice publicly refused to comply, arguing that she read more

Bill Fletcher Weighs in on Impeachment

By David Swanson

The one thing protesting for impeachment at Congressman John Conyers’ office on July 23rd accomplished beyond doubt (I think it also helped push a number of other Congress Members to sign on for impeachment, but can’t prove it) is that it stirred up a great deal of discussion, both of impeachment and of racial divisions. Three-quarters of the article simply recounted Conyers’ record of service in Congress, hitting only the positive notes. The rest of the article is quoted below with commentary:

More than a year ago, Conyers read more

A Word from Congressman Nadler's Predecessor

By David Swanson

Former members of the House Judiciary Committee often have excellent advice for current members. Former Congresswoman Liz Holtzman, who served on the committee when it passed articles of impeachment against President Richard Nixon, has published a book and spoken at numerous events arguing for the impeachment of President George W. Bush.

As far as I know, nobody has heard lately from former Congressman Don Edwards. He was the chair of the subcommittee on civil and constitutional read more

Commenting on the Black Commentator

By David Swanson

I’ve been a reader and contributor to the Black Commentator since it began, as well as to the Black Agenda Report, which split off from it. The July 23rd sit-in in Congressman John Conyers’ office, in which I took part, has led to quite a brouhaha in both publications. Last week the Black Agenda Report printed a column I wrote about that action, and the Black Commentator published a column by Rev. Lennox Yearwood who also took part, as well as a response from Larry read more
