Impeachment
Impeach07 Campaign Launched
The impeachment movement is uniting and expanding. We’re joining with many other organizations to launch Impeach07, a coordinated series of actions aimed at impeaching Bush and Cheney through widespread public protest, creative dissent, media activism, education, and lobbying: http://www.impeach07.org
Bush and Cheney have misled this nation into an aggressive war, spied in open violation of the law, and sanctioned the use of torture — among numerous other offenses. Newsweek reported

Movement in the Impeachment Movement
By Evan Derkacz, Alternet
Guest post by David Swanson.
There is movement in the impeachment movement. And it’s motivated by a strange sensation: hope. In Olympia, Wa., on Tuesday, over 800 people crammed in for a forum on impeachment with Ray McGovern, Elizabeth de la Vega, and Dave Lindorff. Why?
Not, I think, because of those three people, each of whom I consider a friend and a brilliant speaker. Rather, the excitement was focused on Eric Oemig, a state senator, who was there to discuss

The Fierce Urgency of Impeachment
By David Swanson
Remarks at Emergency Impeachment Conference in New York City, February 17, 2007
It’s an honor to be speaking with these panelists and it’s great to be back in New York. But I want to ask you one thing about New York, because there’s something I heard Senator Hillary Clinton say and I want to know if it’s true. Is it true that if you live in New York you have to support this war? Can you live in New York and work for peace?
That’s what I thought.

Conyers and the Impeachment Table
By David Swanson
Congressman John Conyers, Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, has used the following rhetoric repeatedly in recent weeks:
“George Bush has the habit of firing military leaders who tells him the Iraq war is failing. But let me tell you something. He can’t fire you. He can’t fire us. But we can fire him! We can fire him!”
You can watch Conyers say those words to a crowd of 500,000 on January 27th in this video:

Lobbying for Impeachment
Remarks at United for Peace and Justice Pre-Lobby Day Event on Jan. 28, 2007

By David Swanson
It’s an honor to be part of this obviously growing movement for peace and justice. Our president took us into war before Congress gave its so-called authorization. He did so without telling Congress or the American people and without Congress appropriating any funds for the purpose. In the summer of 2002, Bush took $2.5 billion – according to the

Putting It on the Table: Kucinich Says Bush Risking Impeachment
“The degree to which this President continues to take steps to go to war against Iran without consulting with the full Congress is the degree to which he is increasingly putting himself in jeopardy of an impeachment proceeding.” – Dennis Kucinich

The State of the Impeachment
By David Swanson
On the same day that Bush delivered his state of the union address, eight state senators in New Mexico introduced a resolution (Senate Joint Resolution 5) that if passed would require their state government to send a petition to the U.S. House of Representatives asking that impeachment proceedings immediately begin against Bush and Cheney.
Over 100 citizens showed up for the introduction, and there were over two hours of citizen speeches at the announcement event. Reporters from

At the National Conference for Media Reform in Memphis, Tenn., on January 13, 2007, a bunch of us got together and organized a couple of ad-hoc panels about the war and impeachment. On a day’s notice, we packed the rooms and drew crowds that wanted to discuss these issues as long as the

Land of Enchantment and Impeachment
By David Swanson
There is a decent chance that within the next month or two the New Mexico State Legislature will ask the U.S. House of Representatives to begin impeachment proceedings against President Bush and Vice President Cheney. And there is the definite possibility that a Congress Member from New Mexico will take up the matter when it gets to Washington. The Jefferson Manual, rules used by the U.S. House, allows for impeachment to be begun in this manner. It only takes one state legislature.

Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney Makes the Case for Impeachment
By David Swanson
As some people learned from the minimal and abusive media coverage, on December 8, 2006, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney introduced Articles of Impeachment [ http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/node/16230 ]against President George W. Bush, making him the 10th president of the United States to face such action. Of course, McKinney was on her way out of office and thus more willing to challenge the Democratic Party leadership by upholding basic Constitutional principles.

The Best Reasons Not to Impeach, And Why They're Wrong
By David Swanson
Political questions are tricky and complicated. Sometimes causes that are just and good must take a backseat to other priorities or long-term strategies. Setting all such perfectly reasonable considerations aside for a moment, I’d like you to ask yourself a simple yes or no question: Do you think President Bush has committed one or more impeachable offenses?
If you said no, I want to talk to you for a second. If you said yes, let’s talk in just a minute – but
