At the National Conference for Media Reform in Memphis, Tenn., on January 13, 2007, a bunch of us got together and organized a couple of ad-hoc panels about the war and impeachment. On a day’s notice, we packed the rooms and drew crowds that wanted to discuss these issues as long as the read more

Follow Pelosi or Follower Pelosi?

By David Swanson

Larry Everest made an interesting comment on a panel we did in Memphis last weekend. He said that if Nancy Pelosi, who claims her top priority is ending the war and who claims to support democracy, were to ask people to come to Washington, D.C., on January 27th to march against the war, probably 20 million people would come. Such an action by Pelosi would not require that she take any controversial position, merely that she lead.

Rev. Glenda Hope sent around an Email that was read more

It All Started With an American Taliban

By David Swanson

It began with that monstrous young man so evil we needed to blindfold him and strap him to a board, that confusing young man who looked like Christ but cast us in the role of crucifiers, that treasonous young man who brought dark and heathen evils across linguistic and cultural borders and brought torture onto the list of accepted government actions.

When you hear the phrase “American Taliban” you probably think of a young American who betrayed his country, aided its read more

Impeach Disney and General Electric
Remarks at the National Conference for Media Reform in Memphis, Tenn., January 13, 2007.
By David Swanson

By any serious standard of journalism, impeachment should be in the news right now. This illustrates the worst problem with our media. It’s not how they cover stories. It’s how they do not cover stories.

A Newsweek poll a while back said that 51 percent of Americans want Bush impeached and 44 percent do not. That’s about double the read more

Bush’s Escalation Speech
Remarks at the National Conference for Media Reform in Memphis, Tenn., January 13, 2007.
By David Swanson

I’d like to request that nobody shout during this event, and I’ll tell you why. I watched Bush’s speech with some people who thought it would be a good idea to take a sip of liquor every time he told a lie. Three days later my head is aching.

But it aches mostly because of the media’s coverage of the speech. Idiots don’t offend read more

Land of Enchantment and Impeachment

By David Swanson

There is a decent chance that within the next month or two the New Mexico State Legislature will ask the U.S. House of Representatives to begin impeachment proceedings against President Bush and Vice President Cheney. And there is the definite possibility that a Congress Member from New Mexico will take up the matter when it gets to Washington. The Jefferson Manual, rules used by the U.S. House, allows for impeachment to be begun in this manner. It only takes one state legislature. read more

Why Do We Need a National Conference for Media Reform?

By David Swanson

Here’s why.

Bush just connected Iraq to 9-11 again, and the media will not tell you it was a lie.

Bush just gave a list of reasons why this time his escalation of the war will work. The reasons amounted to:

1)We’ll have more troops.
2)We’ll go into neighborhoods holding hands with Iraqis
3)Maliki won’t “tolerate” any interference

A minute later Bush told us there will still be IED attacks and suicide bombings. The media will not point out that such read more

Mr. President, Surge This

By David Swanson

Here’s a statement that’s blasphemy both in the peace movement and in the halls of the warmongers:

Whether we escalate the war or not is unimportant.

Here’s the situation we’re in. President Bush and his gang lied us into a war. The occupation of Iraq has nothing to do with weapons of mass destruction or 9-11 or Saddam Hussein or democracy or making Americans more safe. There is no reason for this war respectable enough to discuss in public. And so, read more
