How the Blogosphere Is Saving the Boob Tube

By David Swanson

Judy Daubenmier spent 25 years as a reporter for the Associated Press and saw the field of news reporting sliding downhill. Now she works to reform our system of communications through the internet. Daubenmier is the author and editor of “Project Rewire: News Media from the Inside Out.” I talked to her about her work and her hopes for news reporting in the future.

Here’s the audio.

Terrific New Impeachment Video

On March 9, a church basement in Washington, D.C., filled up with people eager to discuss and debate impeachment. Four speakers began the discussion with brief remarks: 27 year veteran CIA analyst Ray McGovern, founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity; David Swanson, co-founder of AfterDowningStreet.org and former staffer for Dennis Kucinich’s presidential campaign; Dave Lindorff, author of “The Case for Impeachment”; and John Judge, former staffer of Rep. Cynthia read more

On David Sirota, David Obey, and "Idiot Liberals," Never Mind Ending the War

By David Swanson

David Sirota has just published an article disagreeing with me, which is quite disturbing because I usually agree with and often admire Sirota’s work. And yet, the claims he makes in this article don’t persuade me. So, my inclination is not to pretend they do because Sirota has done good things in the past. Sirota, however, would like us to all pretend that what Congressman David Obey is currently doing is acceptable because he’s done something good in the read more

What's Wrong With David Obey

By David Swanson

The reason I sent the media a video of House Appropriations Chair David Obey (Dem., Wisc.) throwing a bit of a fit was not just to embarrass him. Nor was it, as some Democratic Party Die-Hards allege, to foolishly split the forces of good and allow the evil Republicans to prevail.

The split between the Progressive Caucus and the Democratic Leadership already existed. The Progressive Caucus has taken a stand for funding only a withdrawal of our troops from Iraq and not funding read more

Subpoena Dick

By David Swanson

I’ve spoken at impeachment forums, debates, rallies, strategy meetings, and workshops, but tonight’s event in Washington, D.C., will be the first I’ve spoken at since the Vice President’s Chief of Staff was convicted for lying to protect him. So, I’m going in expecting fewer objections and reservations about impeachment. Still, it’s useful to yet again lay out all the familiar ones and why they are more wrong than ever.

I understand that Congressman read more

The War Money Can Be Stopped

By David Swanson

If the Republicans in the House vote against the Supplemental spending bill to throw another roughly $100 billion at this war because the bill requires that troops be trained and rested, provides for veterans health care, gives money to Katrina relief and avocado growers, and threatens to move the war to Afghanistan if Bush doesn’t make various claims about “progress” in Iraq in the coming months…

And if the Progressive Democrats vote against it because it funds read more

Iran in Congress' Sights

By David Swanson

The U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs is prepared to follow in Dick Cheney’s footsteps and shoot a friend in the face. I just sat through a hearing on Iran, and there is apparently universal bipartisan agreement in the committee that Iranians feel kindly toward Americans and welcome them as friends, and that Iranians should be brutally punished by the toughest economic sanctions possible. This simple truth went unstated: sanctions kill.
