Lee Rejects Bush's 3-More-Years-in-Iraq Treaty

Congresswoman Barbara Lee has just reintroduced a resolution opposing the treaty Bush made with his puppet government in Iraq to supposedly legitimize three more years of war. The treaty calls itself an “Agreement on Withdrawal,” which is misleading enough, but commentators tend misleadingly to refer to it as a “security agreement” or a “status of forces agreement.” The treaty makes war for three years, and its illegitimacy means that the occupation of Iraq read more

Let Judgment Be Bush's History

By David Swanson

History cannot be the judge of Bush and Cheney. The corporate news really is the first draft of history, and there will be no magical leap from its dishonesty to an honest account. Most in the Washington establishment want to protect Bush and Cheney and gang, although the New York Times has now printed one column admitting the obvious point that if the outgoing criminals are not punished, their heirs will repeat their crimes.

Holder Will Have to Prosecute

By David Swanson

After comments made in his confirmation hearing, Attorney General nominee Eric Holder will be hard pressed not to prosecute Bush, Cheney, and their co-conspirators, or to appoint a special prosecutor.

When Senator Patrick Leahy asked if waterboarding is torture and illegal, Holder agreed that it is. When Leahy then asked whether the President of the United States can immunize acts of torture, Holder said that he cannot.

When Senator Diane Feinstein said that an Inspector General’s read more

Conyers Explains Why He Hasn't Impeached

By David Swanson

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers has released a lengthy new report that updates his previous report originally released in 2005 documenting Bush and Cheney’s crimes and impeachable offenses. The new report recommends that the Attorney General appoint a Special Counsel, even while making other recommendations that could delay read more

Bush Defenders Strain Painfully to Cover His Crimes

Check out this defense of Bush from the American Enterprise Institute. Not one word to suggest that Bush’s actions benefited anyone. The bulk of the article devoted to claiming that the executive aggrandizement Madison feared was predicted by Alexis de Tocqueville. I’ll predict right now that we’ll see more of it and worse if Bush is not placed behind bars, but that doesn’t mean I endorse it and read more

Media General Columnist Mocks Victims of Discrimination

By David Swanson

Here’s a columnist in Media General newspapers named Scott Hollifield ridiculing Raed Jarrar’s settlement that gave him $240,000 as compensation for having been thrown off an airplane for looking middle-eastern and wearing a t-shirt with Arabic words on it. This is an on-going problem. A whole family was thrown off an airplane at National Airport in Washington, read more

Against Truth, Reconciliation, and Commissions

By David Swanson

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers has introduced a bill, H.R. 104, that would create a commission to spend a year and a half looking at the various crimes of Bush and Cheney. While this might allow congressional Democrats to run election campaigns against Bush and Cheney yet again, even though those two will have been out of office for two years, it’s not clear that it would do much else that would be positive.

The problem with pursuing “truth” is read more

What to Ask Eric Holder

On Thursday, January 15, at 9:30 a.m., the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold its confirmation hearing for Attorney General nominee Eric Holder. If the Senators are willing to work together and to listen to those of us who elected them, the questioning might go something like this:

Mr. Holder, is the water torture, often now referred to as “waterboarding”, torture? Are beatings torture? Are electric shocks torture? Is hanging someone by their wrists torture? What about the combined read more
