To the Virgins, to Make Less of Passing Legislation

By David Swanson

So you think you can pass bills now
You’re dipping your quills now
You’re ready to legislate

Scattering flower seeds on asphalt
Instructing lions in vegetarianism
Writing a contract with a stick in the sand
Teaching surgery to your rhinoceros
Thinking with the television on
Filling out college applications in your death bed
Blow drying your hair in a rain storm

Passing legislation with a dictator in the White House

Are laws for framing on your wall or enforcing?
What would the framers of the Constitution say?

There is a better use for your sacred and immeasurable time
A necessary struggle for justice
Forming a more perfect union
A republic if you can keep it
The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States
Shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of
Treason
Bribery
Or other high crimes and misdemeanors

Get up, boys and girls
Feed your new year’s Resolutions to the dog
Put on your marching shoes
A meeting’s been called in Philadelphia
There can be no denial
No more being in denial
No delaying of a trial
Are you a sunshine patriot
Your courage smothered by a flag unfurled
Or will you go the extra mile for
Of, by, and for
Your nation and the world?

Impeach Bush and Cheney now
For peace
Now
Impeach
