When David Wu Sat Down at My Table in Starbucks

Congressman David Wu is now resigning in a sex scandal. I have no idea re his possible guilt. But he sure did make a lousy congressman, something that somehow never creates a scandal. Back on March 10, 2010, I blogged the following:

Liveblog: Vote to End the War on Afghanistan Today

8:28 a.m. Congressman Kucinich still does not know what time the debate and vote will be. I just saw Rep Raul Grijalva plodding down the sidewalk looking rather glum. No doubt he'll vote for ending the war and plan to vote for funding it next month if he's needed. Obviously his soul, if he has one left, is not needed in this town.

The Small Group of Thoughtful, Committed Citizens Has Been Drugged

Movements for justice have historically been driven by a small percentage of any population. One percent of Americans nonviolently occupying Washington, D.C., could make Cairo and Madison and Madrid look like warm-up acts. It is certainly true that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens is the only thing that ever has changed the world for the better.

So, what happens if a society picks out a significant slice of its population, one including many thoughtful and committed citizens, and drugs them?

Obama Denies Vermont Healthcare

Here's the news as I received it in an Email from Thom Hartmann's radio show on Wednesday:

"Vermont is one step-closer to becoming the first state to set up a truly universal, single-payer health care system. The Vermont Senate passed the new healthcare bill yesterday - following in the footsteps of the state House that passed the bill last month. Now - it just needs to be signed into law by Governor Peter Shumlin who's already expressed his support for the measure. There IS one last step though - Vermont would need to secure a waiver to opt out of Obamacare in order to build its own healthcare system.

I'm Down With Dennis

By David Swanson

Let me get this straight. The Senate will pass a public option if the House will. And the House will, because it already did. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi won’t allow it. So the mortal enemy of public-option backers is . . . Dennis Kucinich.

Why? Because when Congressman Kucinich said he'd stand for a public option he stupidly thought he was supposed to mean it.

Let's review a brief history of the disease known as "health insurance reform."

I ain't gonna buy mandated health insurance

To the tune of Maggie's Farm

I ain't gonna buy mandated health insurance
No, I aint gonna buy mandated health insurance
Well, I wake up and I'm coughing
Feel my sides and moan in pain
I got declined for operations
And it's drivin' me insane
It's a shame the way we treat the working poor
I ain't gonna be insured no more.

I ain't gonna buy mandated health insurance
No, I aint gonna buy mandated health insurance
Well, it hands you a nickel
That costs you a dime
It'll charge you once
And then two or three more times
Then they fine you every time you slam the door
I ain't gonna be insured no more.

I ain't gonna buy mandated health insurance
No, I aint gonna buy mandated health insurance
The premiums double
While the co-payments rise
Coverage narrows

Will Health Bill Allow States to Do Better?

By David Swanson
http://afterdowningstreet.org/letstatesdoit

The health insurance bill currently under consideration in Congress would forbid states from providing their residents with healthcare. An amendment correcting that problem was passed in committee last July and then quietly removed. A new campaign is asking the Democrats who voted for that amendment to withhold their votes on the bill until it is reinstated.

Overview of Single-Payer Healthcare in the States, Thanks to Kathlyn Stone

Kathlyn Stone has done what I should have done and collected my recent postings on state level single-payer healthcare on her blog.

imageThe question isn’t if a state will enact true health care reform before Congress, but which state and when.
