A CLARION CALL TO REAWAKE AND REVITALIZE THE ANTI-WAR/PEACE MOVEMENT IN MAINE

Maine had until recently a vibrant anti-war/peace/impeachment movement that seemed to be making a difference. More recently the movement has dissipated, people are quieter in their expressions, demonstrations tend to draw fewer participants than in the past and Maine is in no way unique. It is endemic across the country. Calls to mobilize go unanswered.

The issues that energized us in the past have not gone away, have not been resolved and in many instances have become more severe in their consequences. Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, lack of accountability, torture, industrial/military complex domination, health care for all – these are issues which are interrelated and call out for more assertive responses.

On November 6, 2009 Mainers will once again have the opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to peace and justice, to an end to war, to recreating a healthy nation. On that date a Rally will be held on Monument Square, Portland at 5 PM and will feature David Swanson, co-founder of the After Downing Street Coalition, a leading activist who is well-known in Maine. The Rally is being co-sponsored by Veterans for Peace – Chapter #001, Code Pink, Peace Action Maine, Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, and Waterville Area Bridges for Peace and Justice.

The Rally is still in the early planning stage and we invite other organizations to join in as co-sponsors. All organizations and individuals who receive this email are urged to forward this announcement to your organization and individual mailing lists.

Immediately following the conclusion of the Rally at 6 PM, David Swanson will go to the Longfellow Bookstore, just a few yards away, and do a Book Signing of his recently published work, DAYBREAK: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union. David will speak about his book and be available for a Q & A. Plan to attend both events.

This is your opportunity to demonstrate that the people of Maine are not going to quietly accept the direction in which our country is headed.
