David Swanson to Speak and Lead Discussion at Screening of The Tillman Story

Bestselling author David Swanson's new book is not yet published, but he will have 20 copies to sign and sell at this first event of a new book tour.  Swanson will speak at this Wednesday's screening of The Tillman Story at the Naro Cinema in Norfolk, Va. (7:30 p.m., Nov. 10, 2010).

WAR IS A LIE addresses the story of Pat Tillman and every other kind of war lie.  The book is a thorough refutation of every major argument used to justify wars, drawing on evidence from numerous past wars, with a focus on those wars that have been most widely defended as just and good. This is a handbook of sorts, a manual to be used in debunking future lies before future wars have a chance to begin.  The book will be in stores and online sellers by December and is available now at half-price for orders of 10 or more at http://warisalie.org

Here's what some people are already saying:

“David Swanson despises war and lying, and unmasks them both with rare intelligence. I learn something new on every page.” — Jeff Cohen, founder of FAIR and author of Cable News Confidential.

“While Americans elect leaders whom they trust are honest, truthful and really care about the kids they send to kill for our country, War Is A Lie reveals decade after decade the sordid side of our history — that our elected officials lie us into war with stunning and embarrassing regularity and are little concerned about the harm to innocent civilians, much less to members of our own military.” — Colonel (retired) Ann Wright, author of Dissent: Voices of Conscience.

“This book is every American’s best defense against the greatest danger we face as human beings: the threat of war. Swanson reveals how American leaders (from both major political parties) have confused the public to create the illusion of consent for endless destruction and slaughter. Behind the fear-mongering, flag-waving and lies of George W. Bush and the blandishments of Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama lies the ugly reality that our leaders have been seduced by political ambition, delusions of military superiority, and the promise of secrecy and impunity to commit otherwise unthinkable crimes.” — Nicolas J. S. Davies, Author of Blood On Our Hands: the American Invasion and Destruction of Iraq.

THE TILLMAN STORY

Pat Tillman gave up his professional football career to join the Army Rangers in 2002 — thus becoming an instant symbol of patriotic fervor and unflinching duty. But the truth about Pat Tillman is far more complex, and ultimately more heroic, than the caricature created by the media.

And when the government tried to turn his death into war propaganda, they took on the wrong family. From her home in the Santa Cruz mountains, Pat's mother, Dannie Tillman, has led the family's crusade to reveal the truth beneath the mythology of their son's life and death. Featuring candid and revelatory interviews with Pat's fellow soldiers as well as his family, Amir Bar-Lev's emotional and insightful film not only shines a light on the shady aftermath of Pat's death and, calling to task the entire army chain of command, also examines themes as timeless as the notion of heroism itself. Narrated by Josh Brolin. (97 mins)
