Bush Firing Disloyal Federal Employees

By David Swanson

Half the story has been told. On Tuesday the Washington Post reported that Bush is creating civil service positions for loyal appointees, in order to make it hard for Obama to get rid of them.

Bush has also, for some time now, been terminating large numbers of employees in the federal government, people known as whistleblowers, people suspected of disloyalty. Some of the higher profile cases are well known.

But there is more to the story. And it follows the strategy described read more

Diebold Went Down to Georgia

By David Swanson

The 60 vote filibuster-proof majority for the Democrats in the Senate looks like it will come down to a run-off Senate race in Georgia, barring the appointment of some Republican senators to plum jobs in Obamaland or finally giving DC voting representation. If the Democrats do not get that super majority, they will have an excuse for ignoring the public will — and you can bet your golden fiddle they’ll use it.

The Georgia senate seat is of course a seat that was stolen read more

Veterans Occupy National Archives

By David Swanson

This was the second time that a group of veterans opposed to illegal wars and in favor of the rule of law had taken over the National Archives building in Washington, D.C. The first time, several weeks ago, a group of them had climbed onto a ledge on the front of the building with flags and banners. This time, they aimed higher.

Mike Ferner gave me a report over the phone at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. He said that at 7:45 a.m. he and others had arrived at the Constitution Avenue read more

What If Labor Opposed War?

By David Swanson

I think the peace movement and every justice movement in the United States should simply overwhelm Congress members during the next two months with one and only one demand: Pass the Employee Free Choice Act in January. This is, of course, the bill that the labor movement has been trying to pass for years, and that Democrats in Congress and President Elect Obama have committed to making law: http://aflcio.org/joinaunion/voiceatwork/efca

At the Charlottesville City Council’s October 6th meeting, a group of citizens organized by the Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice, urged the Council to take up at its November meeting a resolution opposing a U.S. attack on the nation of Iran. While Mayor Dave Norris has expressed support for the idea, it is not clear where the four other City Councilors stand.
